On May 24, 2025, JCI Manila commemorated the 15th anniversary of its Smokey Mountain Baseball Program (SMBP) with Project Grand Slam, an international baseball clinic. Hosted at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium in collaboration with No Border Academy and JCI Tokyo, the event united Japanese baseball experts and young Filipino athletes. Through the spirit of baseball, the clinic celebrated 15 years of sportsmanship, discipline, and international friendship fostered by the SMBP.
Project Grand Slam distinguished itself through significant international collaboration, partnering with No Border Academy and JCI Tokyo to welcome over 40 Japanese delegates, including five former professional baseball players. These experts led advanced training sessions, sharing their refined techniques and personal stories of discipline and perseverance, offering invaluable inspiration to the Filipino youth athletes.
The presence of the Japanese delegation emphasized the importance of cross-cultural exchange in sports, fostering mutual appreciation through shared activities and discussions. This international aspect transformed the clinic into a global celebration of baseball, facilitating the exchange of knowledge, friendship, and mutual respect. The event showcased the power of sports as a tool for diplomacy, mutual respect, and global unity.
Project Grand Slam centered on empowering young athletes from underprivileged communities, welcoming 141 elementary and high school students from various teams. For these children, baseball offers hope, discipline, and personal development beyond just a sport. Local and Japanese coaches conducted a baseball clinic focused on enhancing batting, pitching, fielding, and base-running skills through engaging and challenging drills. The activities were designed to promote teamwork and perseverance.
Uniquely, the event highlighted the importance of holistic development, with coaches teaching leadership, resilience, and a positive mindset applicable beyond baseball. This rare opportunity allowed young athletes to learn from international professionals and compete with diverse peers, boosting their confidence and inspiring bigger dreams.
Beyond technical training, this project gave importance to intercultural connections and lasting friendships by creating opportunities for Filipino and Japanese participants to interact and bond over their shared passion for baseball. Throughout the event, friendly games and conversations helped bridge language barriers, fostering an atmosphere of warmth and inclusivity.
These exchanges allowed both groups to share their baseball experiences and cultural traditions, promoting mutual understanding and respect. The friendships forged during the event underscored the unifying power of sports. This spirit of unity demonstrated the potential for shared experiences to overcome cultural divides and build a more connected and compassionate global community.
The 15th anniversary of the Smokey Mountain Baseball Program was not just a celebration of longevity but a testament to the program’s profound impact on the community. Over the past decade and a half, SMBP has provided hundreds of children from disadvantaged backgrounds with opportunities to learn, grow, and pursue their dreams.
During the event, alumni and current participants shared impactful stories of how the program had transformed their lives. They attributed their development of discipline, teamwork, and resilience to the program, qualities crucial for overcoming challenges both in sports and in life. Some alumni have successfully pursued higher education and various careers, acknowledging the foundational values instilled by SMBP.
The anniversary also served as an opportunity to recognize the unwavering dedication of the coaches, volunteers, and partners who have sustained the program. Their commitment has solidified SMBP’s role as a source of hope and opportunity for young individuals in Smokey Mountain and surrounding areas, reaffirming its mission to cultivate future athletes and leaders through baseball for positive community impact.
The success of Project Grand Slam was the result of a collective effort by multiple organizations and individuals. JCI Manila, JCI Tokyo, No Border Academy, and a dedicated team of volunteers all played crucial roles in bringing the event to life. Their collaboration showcased the power of community support and effective leadership in achieving shared goals.
Special recognition was given to the JCI Manila Senators, JCI Tokyo Senators, and Project Chairman Martin De Joya, whose vision and leadership were instrumental in the event’s organization. Their commitment to youth development and international cooperation set a powerful example for others to follow.
The seamless execution of the event, from logistics to programming, reflected the dedication and professionalism of everyone involved. The enthusiastic participation of athletes, coaches, and supporters demonstrated what can be accomplished when communities unite for a common cause.
