On April 11, 2025, JCI Manila proudly launched “Project Gupit at Pangarap” at Hospicio de San Jose, one of Manila’s oldest and most revered institutions dedicated to caring for marginalized individuals. This meaningful initiative provided haircut training to 37 beneficiaries, offering them not only a practical skill but also a renewed sense of dignity, independence, and hope. The event embodied JCI Manila’s commitment to uplifting lives through skill development and strong community partnerships, demonstrating how simple acts of service can create lasting social impact.
At the core of this initiative was the goal to equip marginalized individuals with practical barbering skills. The 37 beneficiaries from Hospicio de San Jose participated in hands-on haircut training sessions designed to teach them the fundamentals of barbering–from proper handling of tools to mastering various haircut techniques. This training was more than a technical lesson. It was an opportunity to build confidence, foster self-reliance, and restore self-worth among participants who often face social exclusion.
These individuals gained a pathway toward financial independence by learning a valuable trade. Barbering is a skill that can be practiced with minimal capital investment and has steady demand, making it an ideal livelihood option. The training sessions symbolized fresh starts for the beneficiaries, empowering them to envision brighter futures.
The success of Project Gupit at Pangarap was made possible through the collaboration of multiple partners who shared a common vision for community upliftment. The Manila Manpower Development Center (MMDC) played an important role by providing expert trainers who ensured that the haircutting instruction was professional, comprehensive, and tailored to the needs of the beneficiaries. Their involvement guaranteed that the skills imparted were market-relevant and of high quality.
Complementing the training were generous contributions from EPSA Philippines, which supplied essential barber tools and materials needed for the sessions. Additionally, Eddica Barber Chair Supply donated two brand-new barber chairs, which will be installed in the soon-to-be-built barbershop at Hospicio de San Jose. These chairs represent the foundation of a sustainable livelihood hub where beneficiaries can practice and earn.
This multi-sector partnership exemplifies how pooling resources, expertise, and goodwill can create an enabling environment for marginalized communities to thrive. It highlights the importance of collaboration in social projects. The combined efforts of nonprofits, government agencies, and private companies multiply the impact far beyond what any single entity could achieve alone.
The event was graced by the presence of key JCI leaders, including NEVP Atty. Pat Maglinao and RVP Pres Calel Gosingtian. Their attendance was a powerful endorsement of the initiative’s significance within the JCI community and beyond. Their active participation helped raise awareness about the project and motivated both volunteers and beneficiaries.
Leadership support like this is vital for sustaining momentum in community projects. It demonstrates JCI Manila’s commitment to fostering a culture of service and empowerment at all organizational levels. Leaders serve as role models, inspiring members to take initiative and champion causes that transform lives. Their presence also strengthens partnerships and encourages stakeholders to invest in similar programs, amplifying the reach and effectiveness of JCI’s social development efforts.
Project Gupit at Pangarap was part of the larger celebration of JCI Week 2025, a week-long series of events themed “Built Different.” This theme emphasized the unique qualities of JCI members as leaders and change-makers committed to building better communities. Over 25 impactful activities took place across the country, focusing on leadership development, community service, international cooperation, and entrepreneurship.
On the same day as the haircut training, JCI Manila also hosted the “Raising Bright Futures Symposium,” which focused on child development and education. Additionally, a significant Memorandum of Agreement was signed with the Philippine Red Cross to formalize cooperation in humanitarian and disaster response efforts. This holistic approach to community engagement demonstrates how JCI Manila integrates diverse initiatives to address multiple societal needs simultaneously empowering individuals, strengthening communities, and enhancing resilience.
The driving force behind Project Gupit at Pangarap was Project Chairman Carlo Inocencio and his Baby Jaycee group. Their dedication, vision, and organizational skills were instrumental in bringing the project to life. From planning logistics to coordinating with partners and volunteers, their leadership ensured the event’s smooth execution and meaningful impact.
This leadership exemplifies JCI Manila’s core philosophy of nurturing young leaders who are passionate about social change. By taking ownership and responsibility, Carlo and his team demonstrated how proactive involvement can break social barriers and create inclusive opportunities. Their work inspires other members to initiate projects that address community needs, fostering a culture of empathy, innovation, and collaboration within the organization.
Project Gupit at Pangarap is a compelling example of how skill training combined with compassionate service can transform lives. Through strong partnerships, committed leadership, and community support, JCI Manila empowered marginalized individuals to regain dignity and independence. This initiative proves that even simple acts–like teaching haircutting–can spark hope, foster inclusion, and build sustainable livelihoods, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and resilient society.
